Peter Behrens School of Arts

Going full circle from student to part time lecturer.

As I was the first student at the Peter Behrens School of Arts to experiment with VR, I was given the opportunity to teach for a semester thanks to my bachelor's thesis.

Background

As I neared graduation, the emergence of the new generation of VR glasses sparked my curiosity and excitement. Exploring this new field, I immersed myself in crafting VR illustrations, building an AR app using Unity, and designing a book that seamlessly united the digital and physical worlds.

My study delved into various transhumanist movements and their prominent figures, whose perspectives and philosophical ideologies formed the foundation for the illustrations. These concepts also served as inspiration for the layout, typeface, and color schemes employed in the project.

Part-time Lecture

Invited by the Peter Behrens School of Arts to teach a semester-long VR course, I aimed to guide students in developing creative concepts and presenting them through concept boards. Following this, they were tasked with playfully integrating VR and exploring its new possibilities.

Out of over 80 interested students, approximately 16 successfully completed the course with outstanding results, prompting me to advocate for our work to be showcased alongside the final projects at the open day event.

Results & learnings

The course was a big success, benefiting both myself and the students who generated excellent concepts and insights. Despite being offered a five-month extension to teach, I opted to decline.

A great challenge was grasping the diverse needs of each student and support them on their individual journeys. Witnessing their enthusiasm and progress on their projects, undoubtedly stands as one of the most rewarding experiences in my life thus far.
