Speeding up the process and cutting cost
By the end of the year, over 50.000 fire alarm systems must be inspected – every year.
Enable a single person to run a fire alarm check.
After four hours of inspecting the fire alarm systems in the factory alongside the experts, it became evident that we needed to make substantial changes to both our understanding of the task profile and the wireframes presented to the stakeholders. Based on my observations in the factory, these were the most critical pain points:
To provide more space for the table on the small screen of an iPad Mini, the layout had to be re-prioritized. Additionally, the status of the fire detector needed to be made clearly distinguishable.
The task often requires the use of both hands, making one-handed operation essential. Since hanging the tablet around the neck isn't an option, it must be secured to the arm.
The tablet was frequently worn incorrectly, causing the camera to be covered by the body. As a result, the onboarding process was revised.
As a quality-of-life improvement, we added resizable rows to the table and adjusted the layout to accommodate both right- and left-handed users.
Being on-site and observing how people actually use their digital tools is more insightful than any workshop, call or presentation - always.
